Penrith

Penrith is a market town with a long and varied history, gateway to the Lake District and stands in the Eden valley a rural area with pretty villages to the north-east of Ullswater.

The town has excellent transport connections being close to the M6 and the A66 cross Pennine route is today an important shopping centre for the surrounding area.

In the ninth and tenth centuries Penrith was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Cumbria.

The origins of the town's name are uncertain and controversy surrounds the issue, but it is thought to derive from either the Celtic words 'penn' and 'rid' meaning 'hill ford' or 'Pen Rith' which means 'red town'.
